The Evangelical Missionary Church of Canada

1. NAME - The Evangelical Missionary Church of Canada is the name of this federally incorporated organization.

2. PURPOSE - The Evangelical Missionary Church of Canada, in obedience to Jesus Christ her Lord, is committed to being holy people of God in the world and to building His church by worldwide evangelism, discipleship and multiplication of growing churches to the glory of God.

OUR HISTORY - The Evangelical Missionary Church of Canada is the result of a merger between the Evangelical Church in Canada and the Missionary Church of Canada. The Missionary Church originated in revival movements which swept across North America in the latter half of the 19th century. Many of its first members came out of churches deeply rooted in the Mennonite tradition. Under God's leading what came to be known as the Missionary Church of Canada gradually came together through a series of mergers covering nearly one hundred years. Throughout this period the church remained committed to Scripture as the primary source of doctrine and life. In addition to this commitment to being a biblical church, the Missionary Church has recognized the contribution of John Wesley's emphasis on sanctification, the Anabaptist/Mennonite concepts of community, brotherhood and the believer's church; and the evangelical emphasis upon redemption through Christ as the only means of Salvation. The Evangelical Church of Canada had its beginnings in the great spiritual awakening which visited the early colonists in the new world after the middle of the 18th century awakening which took shape through a series of mergers among groups which had strong ties to early Methodism. In 1946 these associations culminated in the formation of the Canadian Evangelical United Brethren Churches merged with the United Church of Canada. The churches who did not wish to become part of the amalgamation eventually became the Evangelical Church in Canada. Many former EUB churches in the U.S. merged with the United Methodist Church; those who did not become the Evangelical Church of N.A. The Evangelical Church brings to the Evangelical Missionary Church a strong emphasis on holy living and great concern for revival in the church in our land.
